The Finest Trophy Bass Fishing on Lake Mateos,FISHING HISTORYNestled in the state of Sinaloa in the
Sierra Madre Mountains of western Mexico, Lake Mateos is a picturesque
lake that has loads of flats, rock islands, bluff shorelines, and rocky
points. From the late 1980s through the early 1990s, Mateos was as good as
any Mexican bass lake ever, if not better, and it got glowing reviews from
writers who visited. Fishing here was hotter than chili peppers at that
time, when most visitors landed a hundred bass per person per day, and
many of them caught two or more bass 10 pounds or better in a day. Some
people called it the best spinner bait and top water lake ever. It was
(and still is) a safe lake, with no road from hell drive to get there. There still exists a fish hatchery on Mateos, which has supplied Florida strain largemouth bass to other lakes in Mexico.
Fishing on Lake Mateos at this particular time is an angler’s dream come true! Phenomenal numbers have been caught, and, like in the past, two good anglers can currently expect to catch 40 to 100 fish per person per day, including trophy fish (depending on ability). Mateos is a world-class top water and spinner bait lake. All your favorite baits will work. During its earlier fishing lifetime, Mateos anglers did not need to fish more than 25 feet deep to catch big bass (unlike other mountain lakes), and this still holds true. You do not need to be a pro to catch fish here! As for trophy fish, the potential is excellent. The lake produced many fish in the 14-16 pound class. Our first groups will have an opportunity to catch the big bass that we know are there, and establish a new benchmark.
The lodge is the only existing fishing camp on the lake, meaning that unlike other crowded lakes in Mexico, these pristine waters are yours alone to fish. Located high into the Sierra Madre Mountain range, there are few distractions at Lake Mateos Bass Lodge. The Lodge houses 17 guests. The rooms are extremely clean with private bathrooms and showers, pedestal sinks and American style elongated toilets (the Mexican versions are small!) Each room is individually air-conditioned as well. Maid service is provided twice daily. All of the furniture in the camp was handmade by local artists from eloquent Alamo wood.
Catch and release is the prevailing rule at the lodge, with trophy bass photographed and quickly released. Our chef has over 20 years experience working with American clients and
understands their likes and dislikes, he will serve you a variety of
delicious meals including of steak, fish, shrimp, barbecue chicken, and
Mexican specialties during your stay. Dining is in our glass enclosed
palapa dining room overlooking the river! Three meals are served daily in
the central dining room. For you "hard core fisherman, a box lunch
can be provided if you wish to fish all day. With the proper cooperation between commercial operators, lake officials and ourselves, Lake Mateos will soon earn it’s right as the "Premier-Bass-Angling-Destination" in the entire world.
